On April 30, the Embassy of Cuba in the UK hosted a special event at Bolívar Hall to mark International Jazz Day 2025 and honour the legacy of legendary artist and activist Harry Belafonte.
The evening opened with remarks from Her Excellency Ismara Vargas Walter, who highlighted jazz as a symbol of unity, resistance and cultural exchange. The Ambassador paid tribute to Belafonte’s lifelong commitment to justice and solidarity, including his ties to Cuba and other struggles around the world.
Guests enjoyed live performances by the Ramon Goose Quartet, followed by the UK premiere of "Following Harry", a documentary by Susanne Rostock exploring Belafonte’s dual role as artist and activist.
The event closed with a Q&A session and a vote of thanks to all contributors, including Jazzmo’thology, the Embassy of Venezuela, its Bolívar Hall staff, and participating musicians.
The Embassy of Cuba thanks all those who joined us in celebrating the enduring power of jazz and the legacy of a true friend of Cuba.
