London, 23 October 2026. — A delegation from Cuba’s National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) successfully concluded an official visit to the United Kingdom, which took place from 19 to 23 October at the invitation of the British Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (BGIPU).
The delegation was led by Dr Enrique Alemán Gutiérrez, chair of the Cuba–United Kingdom Parliamentary Friendship Group, and comprised MPs Marta Hernández Romero and Carlos Rafael Fuentes León.
Over the course of three days in Westminster, the Cuban parliamentarians held fruitful meetings with representatives from both houses of the British Parliament, including Fabian Hamilton, Steve Witherden, Jeremy Corbyn, Richard Burgon, Dan Carden, Dame Emily Thornberry, Baroness Hooper and members of the Foreign Affairs and International Development Committees.
The programme also included a meeting with Ben Lyster-Binns, the British Foreign Office’s head of Latin America, discussions with Jessica Morden and Wera Hobhouse on parliamentary cooperation and energy issues, as well as a meeting at Chatham House.
The delegation set out Cuba’s positions on bilateral relations, the consequences of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade, and the scope for cooperation in humanitarian and energy matters, as well as other areas.
Of particular significance was the event ‘Cuba Speaks: Cuban MPs at Westminster’, organised by the Campaign for Solidarity with Cuba, which enabled the Cuban MPs to engage directly with the British public and featured impassioned speeches by Richard Burgon and Jeremy Corbyn.
At the University of Nottingham, the parliamentarians took part in academic exchanges, visited the Hennessy Collection and discussed local solutions to the challenges facing Cuba, with a remote contribution from Richard Burgon.
In York, they were welcomed by the Lord Mayor, Margaret Wells, alongside Fabian Hamilton and Rachael Maskell. The discussions focused on local government, cultural cooperation and a proposal to explore the possibility of establishing a twinning arrangement between York and Santiago de Cuba.
The visit helped to strengthen inter-parliamentary relations, expand institutional and academic contacts, and identify new opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
The Cuban Embassy would like to extend its special thanks to Fabian Hamilton MP and the BGIPU team, the other British MPs, the participating organisations and the Campaign for Solidarity with Cuba for their hospitality and support.
The five-day event reaffirmed the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and ongoing exchange in continuing to strengthen relations between Cuba and the United Kingdom.
