Cuba participates in the World Summit on Culture Abu Dhabi 2024.

The Sixth World Summit on Culture began this Sunday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and will last until March 5. The Cuban delegation is chaired by the Minister of Culture of Cuba, Alpidio Alonso Grau and is also composed of the Ambassador of Cuba to the United Arab Emirates, representatives of the Ministry of Culture and the diplomatic representation in that country. In the framework of the Summit, a High-Level Segment convened by UNESCO will be held as a special session to which ten ministers of culture have been invited, including Cuba. The event will be an opportunity to follow up on the agreements adopted at the World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development, Mondiacult, held in Mexico in 2022.

Cuba participates in the panel on the enhancement of the cultural heritage associated with the Coffee Route.

Today afternoon, the Cuban Ambassador to UNESCO, Yahima Esquivel Moynelo participated in the Panel on the enhancement of the cultural heritage associated with the coffee route. The Panel was also attended by the Minister of Culture and Communication of Haiti, Emmelie PROPHETE, with representatives of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and a young Haitian archaeologist. Ambassador Esquivel shared Cuba’s experience in managing the archaeological landscape of coffee plantations in the southeast of the country, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The integrated management of heritage, the management of tourism in archaeological sites and the role of cooperation for the sustainable development of carrier communities were some of the aspects addressed. 

Cuba and UNESCO highlight the role of sport in sustainable development

he Assistant Director-General of UNESCO, Gabriela Ramos, and the President of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation of Cuba (Inder), Osvaldo Vento, valued here today the contribution of sport to sustainable development. At the UNESCO headquarters the head of the Social and Human Sciences Sector and the senior Cuban official gave continuity to their meeting hold just over a year ago in Havana, in which they had addressed the importance of the practice of sport and physical activity for a healthy life. They underlined the commitment of the parties to continue strengthening their cooperation in the sector, focused on contributing to the achievement of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable. 

Cuba participates in the 17th Session of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

The Seventeenth Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions will be held at UNESCO Headquarters from 27 February to 1 March 2024. Cuba participates as a Member State, following its election at the Assembly of States Parties to the 2005 Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, in June 2021. The Cuban Delegation is headed by Yahima Esquivel Moynelo, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Cuba to UNESCO and integrated also by Yailin Castro Loredo, Second Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to UNESCO.

UNESCO chapter of the G77 and China recognize the work of the Cuban Ambassador.

This afternoon, the G77 and China chapter at UNESCO recognized the work of Ambassador Yahima Esquivel Moynelo and her contribution to the strengthening the Group in the Organization. At the plenary meeting of the Group of 77 and China, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the representatives of the member countries of the Group highlighted the work of the Cuban Ambassador in favor of unity and her role in reactivating the G77 chapter in UNESCO. The Ambassador of the State of Palestine to UNESCO, Munir Anastas, on behalf of the Group thanked the Cuban government for its leadership in promoting the interests of the countries of the South.
