Cuba hosted a “collaboratory” of ideas on Education

Havana, April 23, 2025. For two consecutive days, Havana became the point of encounter of education authorities from UNESCO and the country, with the purpose of exchanging good practices and outlining strategies to promote the achievement of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, more specifically, through the achievement of its Goal 4, “Quality Education”.

In the words of UNESCO's regional director, Anne Lamaistre, “as always, Cuba opens the doors to innovation”, referring to the concept of “collaboratory” of ideas, under which this first meeting was held to analyze the situation of Education, not only in the country, but also in the region.

The participation of key actors, such as Cuba's Minister of Education, Ms. Naima Trujillo, the sector's vice ministers, national, provincial and school directors and researchers, together with UNESCO specialists, was fundamental for this review of national and regional progress and challenges in education.

Cuba Defends UNRWA's Essential Work in Supporting Palestinian Refugees

Paris, April 15, 2025. At its 221st session, the UNESCO Executive Board considered the issue of the continuation of the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), a context in which Cuba added its voice in defense of this international organization.

In her intervention in the debate, Cuban Ambassador María del Carmen Herrera Caseiro denounced the Israeli government's decision to ban UNRWA's activities in the occupied Palestinian territories. "The ban on UNRWA, in addition to violating the United Nations Charter and Israel's obligations under international law, deepens the suffering of the Palestinian population," stated the Cuban representative.

Cuban Ambassador Condemns Renewed Israeli Aggression Against Gaza

Paris, April 14, 2025. At the 221st session of the UNESCO Executive Board, Cuban Ambassador María del Carmen Herrera Caseiro condemned in the strongest possible terms Israel's genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. "It is unacceptable to remain silent in the face of renewed Israeli aggression against Gaza, in the face of the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, including thousands of children," the Cuban diplomat stated during the general debate on Gaza.

In her remarks, the Cuban Representative also denounced the Israeli government's attempt to forcibly displace the entire population of that enclave and its attempts to exterminate them by blocking the entry of essential humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. Recognizing the progress made by UNESCO in the implementation of the Emergency Assistance Program for Gaza, the Cuban Ambassador demanded an end to Israel's aggression and respect for the free movement of humanitarian personnel and relief goods as essential requirements for continuing the Program's implementation.

Cuba denounces the effects of the U.S. blockade and the inclusion of the country on the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism

Paris, April 8, 2025. This Tuesday, during the 221st session of the UNESCO Executive Board, Cuba denounced the threats to peace and international cooperation faced by the Organization in the current global context and the effects of the U.S. government's hostile policy on the island for more than 60 years.

“In light of an increasingly dangerous and challenging international scenario, a stronger multilateral commitment is urgently required,” stated Ambassador Dulce María Buergo Rodríguez, president of the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO and representative of Cuba to the Council.

In this context, Cuba denounced the effects of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed and intensified by the government of the United States, the main obstacle to the country's development, as well as the negative impact of the inclusion of the nation in the unilateral list of States that allegedly sponsor terrorism. On the other hand, the Caribbean nation reaffirmed its solidarity with the Palestinian people, victims of more than 75 years of flagrant violations of their legitimate rights as a nation, and made an urgent appeal to reach the only possible solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: the creation of two independent states.

UNESCO attends the Pedagogy 2025 International Congress

Paris, February 15, 2025. The 19th edition of the Pedagogy 2025 International Congress took place in Havana from February 10 to 13. Convened by Cuba every two years, this prestigious event promotes the integration of countries around the world, the exchange of experiences, and the unification of efforts to realize the goals of international and regional conferences in order to achieve quality and inclusive education.

At the opening ceremony, a message from UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Education, Stefania Giannini, was projected.

In her remarks, the UNESCO senior official stated that "in a world marked by deep inequalities, conflicts, and climate crises, education remains our most powerful tool for inclusion, justice, and peace."

She also emphasized that, to truly transform society, education must be reformed. “This principle drove UNESCO's recommendation on education for peace, human rights, and sustainable development, a global framework that considered education as a driver of lasting peace,” she noted.
