UNESCO declares Casabe as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Paris, 5 December 2024. Within the framework of the 19th meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Asunción, Paraguay, UNESCO officially recognized the traditional knowledge and practices for the production and consumption of Casabe as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The proposal, presented by Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, is a reflection of the commitment of our nations to safeguard living heritage.

UNESCO justified the declaration of Casabe as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting its relevance as a symbol of identity, social cohesion and sustainable development in Caribbean communities, while underlining the role of Casabe in preserving peace and dialogue between communities, and its importance as a cultural identity reference in the region.

Establishment of the Group of Friends of Disabilities at UNESCO

Paris, December 3, 2024. In the framework of the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Group of Friends of the Disability was formally established at UNESCO. The initiative, promoted by Venezuela with the support of a group of countries, including Cuba, marks a milestone in the history of the International Organization, by creating a space for coordination and reflection to advance the inclusion of the rights of persons with disabilities in the different areas of UNESCO's competence.

Cuba reiterates its condemnation to the Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip and reaffirms its support for the UN's humanitarian work for Palestinian refugees.

Paris, November 2024. The arbitrary decision of the Israeli parliament to suspend the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) was the subject of a strong denunciation in the framework of the special session of the UNESCO Executive Council, formally requested by Cuba along with 11 other countries, under the theme: "Supporting for the continuity of UNRWA's educational activities in the occupied Palestinian territory."

In her speech at the meeting, Cuban Ambassador María del Carmen Herrera Caseiro strongly condemned the approval by the Israeli legislature of laws that prohibit the action of UNRWA, which she described as violations of the United Nations Charter and Israel's obligations under international law.

“The Israeli government, not content with the unprecedented genocide unleashed against the Palestinian people, which has taken thousands of innocent lives, continues to escalate the spiral of atrocities, by attempting to restrict the necessary humanitarian assistance in the occupied territories and deepen the suffering of the Palestinian population,” said the Cuban diplomat in her speech.

Cuba reaffirms its solidarity with Lebanon at meeting of UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Heritage in the event of Armed Conflict

Paris, November 2024. Within the framework of the extraordinary meeting of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Heritage in the event of Armed Conflict, requested by Lebanon, Cuban Ambassador María del Carmen Herrera Caseiro expressed Cuba's unwavering solidarity with that Middle Eastern country, victim of Israel's indiscriminate attacks against its territory.

In her speech before the Committee, the Cuban diplomat condemned Israeli actions in Lebanon, causing numerous losses of human lives and destruction.

Cuba promotes strengthening of cooperation with UNESCO in documentary heritage

Paris, October 2024. The participation in the International Conference of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme offered a favorable setting to enhance Cuba's cooperation with UNESCO in documentary heritage. At the important event, Cuba was represented by the Director of the Document Management Center of the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Saylin Sánchez Portero, who was accompanied by Maria del Carmen Herrera Caseiro, Cuban Ambassador to UNESCO, and Raysa Rodríguez Gómez, Specialist of the Center.

During her stay in Paris, the island's official held a fruitful exchange with the Assistant Director General of UNESCO for the Information and Communication Sector, Mr. Tawfik Jelassi,
