UNESCO recognizes values of Cuba’s Heritage Village

On the 510th birthday of one of the most patrimonial Villas of Cuba, UNESCO today recognizes its bastions, crucial in the cultural evolution of the region. The celebrations for the Week of Culture of the city at the beginning of February are marked by the celebration of the International Symposium Challenges in the Management and Management of Cities. Anne Lemaistre, director of the Regional Office of Culture for Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Haiti, referred on the opening day of the event to the responsibility of the Cuban school in terms of preservation. With nine World Heritage Sites and five Historic Centers recognized by UNESCO itself, ‘Cuba is an example that is much talked about on a global scale in this task because it values heritage beyond the commercial or tourist aspects, but rather impacts every action with a social purpose’, she said.

Havana Declaration on “Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation”

Havana Declaration on “Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation” adopted in the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Group of 77 and China reaffirms the commitment to strengthen the unity and solidarity of the Group in order to achieve its objectives and to reinforce its role in the current international context. We reaffirm full respect for the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and international law. G77 rejected the imposition of laws and regulations with extraterritorial impact and all other forms of coercive economic measures, including unilateral sanctions against developing countries, and reiterate the urgent need to eliminate them immediately.

Cuba celebrates International Literacy Day 2023.

International Literacy Day is celebrated every 8 September. Despite the achievements made, some 763 million young people and adults lack basic reading and writing skills by 2020, so the issue remains a global priority. Cuba celebrates International Literacy Day, recalling the literacy campaign launched in 1961, which declared the country the first illiteracy-free territory in Latin America. Unprecedented in the history of the Caribbean nation and a starting point for further progress in education. UNESCO has recognized the achievements of the Cuban educational system, as well as the commitment of the Cuban government to ensure public, inclusive, free and quality education that generates opportunities for lifelong learning for all.

UNESCO will participate in the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Group of 77 and China, Havana, Cuba

UNESCO Assistant Director General for Natural Sciences, Ms. Lidia Arthur Brito will represent UNESCO at the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Group of 77 and China, to be held in Havana on 15 and 16 September 2023. Under the theme: "Current Development Challenges: Role of Science, Technology and Innovation", the Havana Summit will strengthen the unity of the Group and will decide collective and practical actions to face in an effective manner the contemporary challenges. The G77 + China, which emerged in June 1964, is the largest and most diverse consultative group in the multilateral sphere, with 134 member states representing two thirds of the membership of the United Nations and 80 per cent of the world’s population.

G 77+ CHINA, UNESCO Chapter, statement to the 216th session fo the Executive Board of UNESCO

The G 77 and China, UNESCO Chapter, is glad to announce that the South-South Cooperation Fund for Education is going on with a new project that will be submitted soon, and we take this opportunity to thank the Education Sector, BSP, and PAX for their valuable support and to encourage Member States to further increase their support to this Fund. This initiative follows up on the Declaration of the Meeting of the Ministers of Education of the Group of 77 and China held on February 2 in Havana, Cuba, which supported the reactivation of the South-South Cooperation Fund for Education as a platform for development initiatives.
