Final Declaration of the 40th Southern Cross Brigade to Cuba

The 40th Southern Cross Brigade concluded at a historic point for Cuba. During this Brigade, we saw Cuba’s removal from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, only to be included again just hours after Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States. The moment of hope that we felt when President Biden removed Cuba from the list was accompanied with suspicion, and an assumption that Trump would continue with the policy of maximum pressure.

Ambassador of Cuba met with members the Southern Cross Brigade

Havana, 21 January 2025. The Cuban Ambassador to Australia, Tanieris Diéguez, met with members of the Southern Cross Brigade in Havana.

The meeting took place during the culmination of the extensive work program carried out by the brigade members in Cuba.

The ambassador took the opportunity to express her gratitude for the solidarity of the Australian people and congratulate the Brigade for the successful 40th edition.

On January 14, 2025, the government of the United States announced the following decisions:

1. Remove Cuba from the State Department list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism;

2. Make use of the presidential faculty to prevent US courts from taking action with regards to lawsuits that might be filed by virtue of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act; and

Cuban dancers residing in Australia send donation to Cuban Ballet School

Perth, Western Australia, January 11, 2025. In a joint collaboration between members of the Southern Cross Brigade and Cuban dancers living in Australia, a donation was made to the Cuban Ballet School. 

The donation consisted of equipment used by students of that art in Cuba. Although modest, this donation carries the feeling of a group of talented young people who are inserted in prestigious Australian dance institutions such as the Western Australia Ballet and the Queensland Ballet.
