IN 2026, what had long been described as an economic blockade against Cuba crossed a dangerous threshold and assumed an openly military character.
Oil tankers were seized in the Caribbean in rapid succession, millions of barrels of fuel were confiscated, and one vessel was taken despite not being under any formal sanctions regime.
The Grenadian outlet Now Grenada published the article The Total Siege Against Cuba, written by the Cuban Ambassador to Grenada, Yadirys Echenique Paz. In the text, the diplomat denounces the measures imposed by Donald Trump against Cuba, describing them as an absolute siege and warning of their consequences on the daily life of the Cuban people.
Ottawa, June 18, 2026 – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Josefina Vidal Ferreiro led a Cuban government delegation on a working visit to Ottawa from June 15 to 17. During the visit, she held meetings with officials from Global Affairs Canada, members of Parliament, and representatives of the Canadian business sector and other economic entities.
