Mr. President,

We are grateful for this thematic debate and reiterate our recognition to both Co-Chairs for their good leadership of the work of the Working Group.

Cuba associates itself with the statement made by Algeria on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement and by El Salvador on behalf of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

In a national capacity, my delegation wishes to express that strengthening the accountability, transparency and institutional memory of the General Assembly is crucial for the successful work of its President.

We support the statement made by the delegation of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Cuba expresses its serious concern about the perilous deterioration of the situation in the Middle East since the last open debate on this issue.

Cuba endorses the statement delivered by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on behalf of NAM.

We welcome the convening of this High-Level Meeting, which will certainly renew the political commitment of Member States and the United Nations system, pursuing the noble objective to achieve and maintain peace.

Mr. President,

We welcome the convening of this interactive dialogue on Harmony with Nature in commemoration of the International Mother Earth Day. It is commendable that the Organization should focus its attention on international cooperation for the care of our Mother Earth and accordingly, we thank the panelists for their presentations.

My delegation endorses the statement delivered by the distinguished delegation of El Salvador on behalf of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples broadly recognizes the special relationship of indigenous peoples with their lands. For all indigenous communities worldwide, that linkage is the essence of their existence, beliefs, customs, traditions and culture.

Brothers and sisters,

It was with deep sadness that we received the news a few days ago about the passing of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, a tireless fighter for the freedom of her people and a symbol of resistance against the apartheid regime.

I wish to convey, on behalf of all Cuba, our most heartfelt condolences and sincere sentiments of solidarity to her family and the Government and people of South Africa.

Madam Chair,

The Cuban delegation fully supports the statement delivered by the delegation of Indonesia on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement.

We congratulate you on your election as Chair of the Disarmament Commission during the substantive sessions this year. We similarly extend our congratulations to the members of the Bureau and the chairpersons of the working groups.

We welcome the fact that agreement has been reached on the issues on the Commission's agenda for this cycle, which will allow us to make progress in the discussions.

Mr. President,

Cuba fully supports the statement delivered by the representative of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement.

We took note of the address by the Secretary-General and the presentations of panelists, as well as the reform proposals to improve United Nations Peacekeeping Operations.

In order to improve security of peacekeeping personnel, the Secretariat should implement actions within the scope of its mandate, in consultation with Member States and due consideration of the relevant bodies.

Mr. President,

Cuba associates itself with the statements made by Egypt on behalf of the G77 and Maldives on behalf of the Small Island Developing States.

We welcome the convening of this timely high-level event to launch the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development", 2018-2028.

The issue of water is at the heart of human survival. As it is wisely asserted: "Water is Life". Access to this resource is a human right whose full enjoyment by all is an objective yet to be reached.
