For many decades now, the people of Cuba have been suffering the grave consequences of the US economic blockade, which has severely hampered Cuba's economic development and prevented the needs of the Cuban people from being met. In recent years, US administrations have further tightened measures against Cuba with actions such as the reinstatement of Cuba on the US State Department's "State Sponsors of Terrorism" list, which was made by the Donald Trump administration and is currently maintained by the Joe Biden administration.

Wimal Weerawansa, Member of Parliament of Sri Lanka and leader of the political party, National Freedom Front, (NFF) published on his Meta page (formerly Facebook) a statement calling on the government of United States to remove Cuba from the list of countries that sponsor terrorism.

The Cuban ambassador to Sri Lanka, Andrés Marcelo González Garrido, received at the diplomatic mission in Colombo DMP Dissanayake, secretary of the Sri Lanka-Cuba Friendship Association and Wilfred Jayasinghe, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka and International Relations Officer, also a member of the Association.
Cuba and Sri Lanka evaluate possibilities of cooperation in the field of Science and Technology
Colombo, May 30, 2024. At the Cuban embassy in Sri Lanka, a meeting was held between the ambassador, Andrés Marcelo González Garrido, with the additional secretary for Development and Innovation of the Ministry of Education, in charge of the Science and Technology, Rojhita Uduwawala.
During the meeting, the ambassador presented the results of scientific development in Cuba, in different spheres of science, technology and innovation, as well as the existence of several institutions dedicated to scientific research with important achievements and recognitions.
