The people of Jamaica bid them a heartfelt farewell

Havana, 27 March 2026 (Granma newspaper) With a sense of duty fulfilled: the Cuban medical brigade’s historic mission on that Caribbean island comes to an end.

“We are back in our homeland, with the satisfaction of having fulfilled our objective in that country, and with the affection of its people, who bid us a heartfelt farewell,” said Dayna Rosa González, an intensive care nurse who was part of the medical brigade in Jamaica, following the arrival in Havana on Friday of the last group of staff who served on that Caribbean island.

First group of medical brigade members who were working in Jamaica arrives in Cuba

Deputy Minister of Public Health Tania Cruz today welcomed the first group of the medical brigade that had been working in Jamaica, following that country’s unilateral decision to terminate its cooperation agreement with Cuba.

“Welcome home!” exclaimed the official, “and you return having honourably fulfilled your mission. We welcome you as an example of humanity and solidarity,” she emphasised.

Cuba regrets the decision of the government of Jamaica to cease medical cooperation, yielding to pressure from the U.S.

Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba reports that, on March 4, the Foreign Ministry of Jamaica communicated to our Embassy in that country the unilateral decision of its government to terminate the health cooperation agreement that has linked both nations for decades.

With this action, the government of Jamaica yields to the pressures of the government of the United States, which is not concerned about the health needs of the Caribbean brothers.

Former Jamaican Prime Minister reaffirms his solidarity with Cuba.

Kingston, 5 March 2026. Former Jamaican Prime Minister and great friend of Cuba, the Most Honourable PJ Patterson, received the Ambassador of Cuba to Jamaica, Tania López Larroque, at the headquarters of the Institute for the Promotion of Africa and the Caribbean at the University of the West Indies (UWI).
