Mr. President,

We thank the Dominican Republic and the other sponsoring delegations for introducing draft resolution L.38 Rev. 1.

We recognize the relevance of this initiative as part of the efforts to grant more visibility to the impact of climate change on the enjoyment of human rights, including the rights to development and to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

The international community continues to fail to reach consensus on the issue of the death penalty. Resolutions on this issue tabled in the Council, the UN General Assembly and elsewhere are consistently adopted by vote, which is a reflection of differences in positions.

Cuba supports the renewal and continuity of the mandate of the Independent Expert on the human rights of older persons and reiterates its willingness to continue cooperating actively and constructively with this important mandate, for the benefit of the promotion and protection of the rights of older persons.
