Cuban ambassador attends ceremony for the arrival of the Chinese New Year in Cyprus.
Nicosia, Cyprus, February 11, 2026.—Invited by the China-Cyprus Solidarity Association and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Nicosia, the Cuban ambassador, Rubén Pino Martínez, attended this Wednesday the ceremony marking the Chinese New Year at the municipality of Lakatamia, in this capital.
The gala for the new "Year of the Horse," according to the Chinese calendar, was sponsored by His Excellency, the Deputy Minister of Tourism of Cyprus, Mr. Kostas Koumis, the President of the aforementioned solidarity association, Mr. Che Huali, and its Honorary President, Mr. Chris Michael. An evening that became a fitting tribute to the increasingly numerous presence of the Asian giant's community in Cyprus and in celebration of the excellent bilateral relations between both nations.
A cultural and idiosyncratic legacy, latent and alive throughout the Cypriot island territory, in close interconnection with the best popular traditions of this Eastern Mediterranean island, as could be enjoyed in the multifaceted and colorful presentation offered by the Chinese-Cypriot cultural team of the host association.

His Excellency Mr. Rubén Pino Martínez, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Cyprus, held a fruitful exchange today with Mr. Alexandros Josephides, Director General of the Cypriot Shipping Chamber, during which they discussed variables and opportunities for bilateral collaboration in the maritime sector.
During the meeting, both parties explored possibilities to strengthen commercial ties between Cuba and Cyprus in this strategic sector, with particular emphasis on the existing availability for hiring highly specialized Cuban maritime personnel.
In turn, the Cuban diplomat provided the Cypriot executive with timely information about the counterparts on the island involved in the matter, while reaffirming his country's strong interest in strengthening its commercial relations in the maritime sector, as well as identifying new cooperation opportunities with the Cypriot shipping industry, one of the most important and recognized worldwide.

The Cuban diplomat thanked his host counterpart and the members of his accompanying team for the invitation, with whom he discussed the positive relations between both nations, while also congratulating the ambassador of the Arab nation, its government, and its people on the occasion of its National Day.

The Cuban ambassador to Cyprus, Rubén Pino Martínez, participated this Monday in the mass held at the Orthodox Church of the Apostle Barnabas in Strovolos, as a final tribute from family and lifelong companions of Donis Christofinis, a veteran activist of the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus (AKEL) and of the Cypriot and international left.
The Cuban diplomatic representative thus paid homage to the dearly beloved comrade of Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara by placing a floral offering at his coffin as part of the funeral honors given by AKEL activists, the United Democratic Youth (EDON) of Cyprus, the World Federation of Trade Unions, the Pan-Cypriot Council for Peace, the Pan-Cypriot Workers’ Federation (PEO), the Pan-Cypriot Women’s Movement (POGO), and other representatives and figures from the left, the trade union movement, and Cypriot parliamentarians gathered there.
Also accompanied by Mr. Abdallah Attari, Ambassador of the State of Palestine in Cyprus, and part of the diplomatic staff of the Chinese Embassy in Nicosia, the tribute featured a special speech by the Secretary-General of the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL), Stefanos Stefanou, who recalled the indelible legacy of Donis Christofinas for the new generations, a veteran activist in the struggles of communist parties, the international left, and progressive and national liberation movements around the world.
Cypriot newspaper Haravgi reviews the tribute event to Cuba's National Hero 'José Martí' in Nicosia, on the occasion of the 173rd anniversary of his birth.

The Cypriot newspaper Haravgi published in its summary editions a brief review of the act carried out in the sculptural group dedicated to José Martí in this capital, a tribute convened on the occasion of the 173rd anniversary of the birth of the National Hero of Cuba.
The review reproduces some references to the struggles for national independence, dignity and international justice, ideas that focused the event in honor of the apostle and poet of Cuba, José Martí, a call that had as its main speaker Hari Policarpou, member of the Political Bureau of the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus (AKEL).
173 years after his birth in 1853, “Homage to Martí”—as the publication was presented— reviews the words of Policarpou, who in his speech emphasized that “José Martí constitutes a symbol of the anti-colonial struggle and of the universal fight of peoples against colonialism, slavery, and social injustice,” while also highlighting that “his work and actions inspired the struggle for national liberation, in which he himself actively participated, giving his life in 1895 in the Battle of Dos Ríos.”
