Cuba recalls implementation of Helms-Burton Act

Havana, March 12, 2026. — Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel today recalled, via the social network X, the 30th anniversary of the signing of the infamous Helms-Burton Act, which reinforced and codified the blockade against the island. The president called the measure an abomination and stressed that no country has the right to legislate for another nation.

Havana, March 12, 2026. — In the spirit of goodwill and of the close and fluid relations between the Cuban State and the Vatican, with which communication has historically been maintained regarding the processes of review and release of incarcerated individuals, the Cuban Government has decided to release in the coming days 51 persons sentenced to imprisonment. All have served a significant portion of their sentences and have maintained good conduct in prison.

Cuba Denounces Impact of the United States Blockade on the Lives of Cuban Women during High-Level Event at UNESCO for International Women's Day

Paris, 9 March 2026 — The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Cuba to UNESCO, María del Carmen Herrera Caseiro, spoke at the high-level event organized by UNESCO on the occasion of International Women's Day, where she denounced the impact of the tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the Government of the United States on the country's development, with particularly severe effects on women and girls.

Ambassador Herrera Caseiro denounced the blockade imposed by the United States as the main impediment to the country's development. She noted that this web of unilateral coercive measures, exacerbated by the energy stranglehold imposed on Cuba, affects the population's access to the most essential resources and services, with a particular impact on women and girls.
