Pretoria, 27 April 2026. — The Government of the Republic of Cuba extends its most sincere congratulations to the people and government of South Africa on the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of Freedom Day, a date that commemorates the historic end of the apartheid system in that African nation. On 27 April 1994, South Africa held its first free elections, an event that marked the official end of apartheid and consolidated democracy in the country. Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first black president, going down in history as a universal symbol of social justice.

South Africa, 17 April 2026 – To mark the 65th anniversary of the victory at Playa Girón, friends and progressive organisations in South Africa held a series of commemorative events, demonstrating once again that Cuba is not alone in its struggle to preserve its sovereignty and dignity. Through these expressions of support, South Africa confirms that the victory at Playa de Girón is not merely a historical event, but a living symbol of resistance that continues to inspire peoples in their struggle against domination and for justice. In every word spoken and every step taken in solidarity, it is reaffirmed that Cuba’s cause is present on every continent, in the present and into the future.

Cuban Ambassador visits the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Pretoria, April 14, 2026 – Cuban Ambassador Fakri Rodríguez paid a visit this morning to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, where he was received by its CEO, Dr. Mbongiseni Buthelezi. It was with great pride that we viewed the Cuban “Order of Playa Girón” awarded to Nelson Mandela in 1984, even while he was unjustly imprisoned on Robben Island. Both parties highlighted the historical ties that unite Cuba and South Africa, which stem from the close relationship between leaders Fidel Castro and Nelson Mandela.
